The Expanse Season 1 Rewatch

By Christopher Schmaltz

Damn, what a good show. I binged this show over the holiday break, and was so engrossed in it that I was surprised when the final episode ended and there wasn’t another one. It does such a good job of capturing the books and an even better job of distilling the characters and challenges for an episodic effort. The CG is fantastic. Full stop, no caveats.

I can’t wait till they dig deeper into the rest of Book 1 and the story that unfolds. So much to tell and so much to reveal.

The show also does an excellent job of looking like a plausible human future. The books and this show are tremendous is postulating a future that looks real. From the subtle touches of the high barriers around the Statue of Liberty (to address the rising waters from global warming), to the actual design of human habitation off Earth. The ship designs are great. The idea that ship design would reflect zero g, but also the “gravity” generated by the Epstein drives is excellent.

Bringing Avasarala into the first season was a great idea too. She doesn’t appear until Book 2 I think, but her character is so meaty and fun that it was really smart to introduce her early. Only bummer is her swearing from the books isn’t depicted in the show. They try, but the TV character loses a bit of her no nonsense, I don’t fuck around, from the books.

I love everything about this show.

Seventy:Andrew’s Dryer makes a guest appearance

Episode Seventy-Andrew’s Dryer makes a guest appearance.

New year, same brothers.
As we have reached another milestone episode and we are starting a new calendar year, this is an episode of looking ahead and changing things up.  We look to add new segments in 2017.  We hope to enliven debate and deeper engage our loyal listeners.  Accordingly, we agree over first Nostalgia Re-watch will be the original Ghost in the Shell anime.
Our tried and true segments of Seen, Read, Played aren’t going anywhere, any time soon.   Andrew watched Patrick’s favorite show of 2017, The Magicians.  Patrick played some Gears of War 4 with an old friend.  Christopher read Patrick’s Christmas present Descender graphic novel and has nothing bad to say about it.  That doesn’t stop him from making fun of Patrick of course.

Episode Sixty Nine: The In Person Holiday One.

We have reached the end of another year.  So we must remember and reflect what made this year unique for us.  Christopher recalls his return to the “World of Warcraft” with it’s most recent D.L.C., “Legion“.  “The Kingkiller Chronicle” dominate Patrick’s 2016.  Andrew remembers those 3 glorious weeks when he played “Pokemon Go” way too much.  All the Boys have their favorites and occasionally we agree.
Trivia is 2016 Box Office Themed.  The Boys get very close.

It’s Christmas time so that means a new Star Wars movie!  We are very happy with this new tradition.   We tell our viewing stories.  We tell you what we love, what we really love, and what we love so much that we got chills.  But this episode isn’t all gushing over the newest Star Wars film, we can be critical of the things we adore as well.  This film is dark, gritty, and fills us with hope. It’s a true Star Wars war film.

It’s a great episode when we have hopeful news to report on for Frank Herbert’s Dune.  We remember the legacy of a beloved character actor from Firefly.  Andrew is deep into Monstress and it is messing with his head.  Christopher reads a fantasy classic by Patricia A. McKillip. Patrick finishes The Name of The Wind and can’t wait to start the next book in Rothfuss’s trilogy.  All the Brothers have seen Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, each feels slightly different about it.  Andrew convinces everyone to download a gaming app for IOS.  Trivia is Dune themed and epically difficult.

It’s a disciplined episode of the BrothersGeek this time around, we keep it under 90 minutes!

With the holiday of Thanksgiving fast approaching each of us has something “geeky” to be thankful for.  Only two of us are brought to tears, you will have to guess which two.

Our collective noodles get baked by the sci-fi drama Arrival and we implore the Academy to recognize the wonderful work of Amy Adams.  We remark on the familiar formula of Doctor Strange.  Also, Westworld completely f*cks us up.  Patrick and Andrew dive into Montress.  It’s dark, violent and beautiful.  Patrick reports on his Wrath of the Machine raid attempts in Destiny: Rise of Iron.  All the Boys slog through the week of Iron Banner, mostly having a good time.

Trivia is World War II movie themed.  And it’s a challenge the Boys nearly conquer.

Happy Halloween everyone!  Our episode is sppooooookkkkeyyy. Except not at all, unless you count Christopher’s harrowing tale of Halloween of 2015.  We discuss the announcement that Penny Dreadful will continue on in an upcoming comic book series.  You’ll likely recall from a previous podcast episode that we had issues with the series finale, like major issues.  We wander into a discussion of violence on television as Chris and Andrew tell Patrick about the new season of The Walking Dead. Christopher sings the praises of a comic book series written by Marjorie Liu and drawn by Sana Takeda called Monstress.  He insists Andrew and Patrick read it.  We all play more Destiny: Rise of Iron.  We report on the goofy fun of Festival of the Lost, wishing there was a little more THERE, there.

Trivia is horror movie themed.  We are not horror movie people.

Recorded 10/18/2016

He has been the only man to consistently win our Podcast’s esteemed “Not Ugly” award week after week and now he has his own series on Netflix.  We discuss our long affection for the character, the cultural depth of a superhero show set in Harlem, New York, and flaws inherent with a story about a bulletproof man everyone keeps shooting with guns.  Our conversation covers nearly all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on television and we express our high hopes for the next series premiering on 03/17/2017, Iron Fist.

The Return to WoW

World of Warcraft: Legion

The Return to WOW

By Christopher Schmaltz

It’s the content, stupid.

Legion has come. Or should I say, the Legion has returned. Not too sure how to phrase that in World of Warcraft’s wacky in-game timeline shenanigans. Regardless, there is a new expansion to WOW, and it has me playing again.

The previous expansion, Warlords of Draenor, was interesting and fun to start, but as it matured, the content became stale, and frankly the garrison feature became work. The rewards weren’t immediate and visceral, and the upgrade path was muddled and too grind-y for my taste. I stopped playing at least six months prior to Legion dropping (probably closer to a year actually), and really didn’t miss it. This is an amazing statement from me too. Once I started playing WOW, 8 years or so ago, I played constantly and with enthusiasm (my wife can attest to such with chagrin).

I had definitely moved on in my gaming life. Playing Destiny, Civ V, Rocket League, some Halo, even a platformer or two (if you haven’t played or seen Ori and the Blind Forest, you need to give yourself that gift – amazing game).

I really like to play a good video game, and the variety in the games I’m playing has been terrific.

But WOW is the granddaddy for me. It fills the D&D hole in my life left by wife, family, job, podcast, home ownership, children concerts and events – basically all things that I love about my life, but that leave me unable to spend 4-5 hours plus with people running a tabletop D&D campaign on a weekly basis. I grew up playing D&D for long, long hours as a kid and young teen, and it is forever imprinted in what makes up, me.

So, when the Legion date was announced and then when the Warcraft movie came out, the WOW spark was relit. I actually logged on to the game to prep my main and alts for the Legion drop.

Legion went live on August 30. I’ve been playing it since day 1. I haven’t played anything else since day 1. This is aided by the fact that the Destiny expansion, Rise of Iron, goes live on September 20, and so it was easy not to play it at the tail end of its current expansion.

Still, Legion is a return to everything that makes WOW fun. Filled with story, gameplay content, and new things to do, these last 3 weeks in game have been a ball. Got my hunter main to max level (110), and now focused on gearing him up.

I hope to make this an ongoing series on my play time in Legion. We’ll see how often I get something written and posted, but for now, Legion is great fun and the return to WOW has been outstanding. See you in game, and FOR THE ALLIANCE!

We really miss each other so we talk, a lot.  Patrick tells stories of the set of an actual movie you will soon hear about it.   We all watch Luke Cage and decide, spontaneously, to record a One Shot about it.  We are all current on Westworld.  It’s effed up. like VERY effed up, but we are totally engrossed.  Andrew reads the greatest comic book in the universe written byRobert Kirkman.  Patrick completes book three of The Expanse.  The Brothersgeek Fireteam returns as Destiny: Rise of Iron brings Patrick back to the game.  Trivia is pod-cast themed, not ours but other pod-casts recorded by people who aren’t us.
