Episode One Zero Six: This Episode is DARK and full of terrors
Recorded 4/29/2019
This is our “Battle of Winterfell” immediate hot take episode. And we feel certain ways and we talk about it. If you are new here, thanks for coming and we hope you come back. If you have been here before, you know the drill and thanks for sticking around.
We do not mince words. This may be one of the best Game of Thrones episodes of the entire series.
Episode 2 of season 8 is classic Thrones in every way. The calm literally before the storm that has been building for multiple seasons. It is quiet and moving and funny and sad and hopeful and ominous and truly something special.
The BrothersGeek instantly react to Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 1. It’s hot and heated and oh so fun. We are committed to recording a new episode every week of the final season. We want to hear from you. Watch along with us!
We feel the impending release of a little game called Destiny 2. Chris and Andrew will be playing as soon as it launches in our time zone. Patrick is less likely to play at launch as Path of Exile is consuming nearly all of his attention. We all discuss season 7 of Game of Thrones in its entirety. We dissect just what was done right and what could have been done better. And now our long watch begins for the final season. It is expected in 2019! Andrew makes a declaration regarding fantasy novels. He finishes (finally) Murder on the Orient Express and he finds the ending delightful. Patrick is reading Descender on Christopher’s recommendation. Christopher has begun Monstress Vol. 2 and it continues to enchant.
In honor of the original Destiny, trivia is unique and is very personal
We make our mother so so proud this episode. We are so civil and get along so well. We don’t raise our voices or disagree at all. Nope, none of that, like at all.
We report on George RR Martin’s new TV deal. We have high hopes. We lament, as always, that Game of Thrones will be coming to an end.
We all saw Suicide Squad. We all feel certain ways about it.
At this point, Chris is going to forcefully hold us down to make sure we watch Brain Dead. Andrew and Christopher are going to assemble a table read for Harry Potter and The Cursed Child. We all discuss the impending release of No Man’s Sky. Those of us who are PC gamers will likely be downloading it in the near future, if it’s remotely good.
Trivia is Harry Potter themed. The Boys are smart enough to almost logic out the answer.
Episode Fifty Eight: Winter has come, at last
Recorded 6/27/2016
Crunchytown population us this episode. But we soldier on!
We spend almost 30 minutes on the “Game of Thrones” season 6 finale and it is totally worth it. If you want spoilers, listen, if you don’t, watch the episode and come back to us. Christopher sings the praises of an epic fantasy novel, Patrick finishes a mediocre thriller, and Andrew re-visits the Holy Grail. We all play board games together, some of them are more complicated than others.
Trivia is “Star Trek” themed, thanks for the suggestion Smiley Aria of Dames Playing Games.
Hey, it’s only been a month! Aren’t you proud of us?! Chris and Andrew get this episode off and running with an energetic and comprehensive review of Phoenix Comicon. Andrew does a Comicon Carry and makes new friends. Chris continues to indoctrinate his daughters into the geek way of life. We couldn’t have more love for Penny Dreadful if we were being bribed by the producers. Andrew scratches the “A Song of Ice and Fire” itch with a novella by GRRM. Chris and Andrew recommend Patrick get caught up with The Expanse. Patrick and Chris detail their love of Overwatch with enthusiastic detail; so much so Andrew can’t even make fun of them for it. The Trivia question goes down the rabbit hole of classic arcade gaming and the answers surprise us all.
Father’s Day Hype! We thank our father for beginning our long strange road of geekery.
We discuss E3 and the games we are excited to play in the coming months.
Seen:
“GAME OF THRONES” FINALE SPOILERS! YOU ARE FORE-WARNED! THE FINALE IS GREAT. ****Spoilers start at 21:00 and end at 31:30***
“Jurassic World” is seen by all. It’s the most popular movie in the world and pure popcorn summer movie goodness. Hashtag Raptor Squad! Bryce Dallas Howard gets the Not Ugly award this episode.
Christopher is excited for a new show on SyFy called “Dark Matter”. It stars Canadian actors you may have seen on other SyFy and CW shows.
Read: All make the commitment to read “Rat Queens” vol. 1 and 2 by the next show.
Andrew continues his months long slog through “Dune”. He doesn’t love it but he knows how important it is to finish this book.
Christopher continues with “The Expanse” series by James S.A. Covey.
Played:
Andrew and Christopher play “Destiny” expansion PvE arena Prison of Elders. Andrew gets the guts to play with randoms via matchmaking. He also has taken to watching Twitch and has subscribed to “Destiny” streamer Professor Broman.
Patrick is the busiest geek in the world with school and an internship but plays mobile game “Fallout Shelter”. It satiates his resource management gamer geek appetite.
Christopher plays “The Witcher 3”. The game is deep and rich and he wishes he could play all the time. But you know, life.
Trivia:
Second Weekend of Release Movie box office themed. The Boys come close.
Discussion: Chris and Andrew attend Phoenix Comicon. Chris reports on an impressive panelist. We both sing the praises of the convention authority for solving logistical traffic issues. They learned from last year’s disaster.
Seen: All have seen “Mad Max: Fury Road” at least once. It amazes on multiple levels. The film is a prime example of the writer’s maxim, “show don’t tell.” The “Flash” finale is sublime. The “Arrow” finale disappoints. We agree the “Ras Al Ghul” storyline was a poor choice this season.
Read: “Rat Queens Volume 1” and “Thor” comics are entertaining, both Chris and Andrew are enjoying female centric comic books right now. Patrick fails once again to finish “Batman: Eternal”. Appropriate levels of shit are given.
Played: Andrew and Christopher play the “Destiny House of Wolves” expansion. It’s the best expansion so far. Prison of Elders is the endgame experience the Brothers Geek Fireteam has been waiting for. Chris loves “The Witcher 3” so so much. He has barely scratched the surface of all the content. Patrick recommends “Marvel: Future Fight” for mobile gaming.
Trivia:
“Game of Thrones” themed: Name the seven aspects of the one God of the Faith of the Seven?
I have been listening to A feast for Crows, the fourth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, or the upcoming season Five of Game of thrones. As I have been listening something popped into my head, these people are “humans”. So why are they so horrible to one another? I mean Earth humans are pretty horrible to one another, but we do not rape and murder like these guys do. Maybe we do, but not as much anymore or not in modern civilized society. Westeros recorded history has been about 12000 years old. They have had the technology to forge and create hard metals, like Valyrian steel for at least that long. They have had the concept of construction and engineering for at least the last 4000 years. So why has their society not advanced past where they are now? I hate to say this but, the missing element might be Christianity. From what I have seen, none of the religions in Westeros teach love thy neighbor, turn the other cheek, or give a promise of heaven after death. Sacrificing yourself is a key term in christianity also, which most people seem kind of selfish or want revenge after some act done against them.
I am not saying that all christians follow these ideals, or that Christians have not killed millions of people over the years, just that the idea of helping others is the foundation of the religion. In the past 2000 years, Christians have reshaped how people treat each other. Sure there were some growing pains, the Crusades, and Spanish Inquisition, but humans have come to understand one another and go toward a civilized idea of looking at our fellow man. I think much in part to christianity, and the promise of going to heaven.
The closest religion in Westeros, looks to be, the Lord of Light religion “one true God”, and Stannis, seems to be the chosen one of this religion. This makes me think of Constantine the Great. Beric Dondarrion ( leader of Brother without Banners) has even been brought back to life, by the Lord of Light’s power. A resurrection of sorts. Blood plays a central role in the Red Priestess’ power magic. Magic is a funny part of this equation. People perform magic given to them by some Deity, and people will follow this religion, because they have seen the power of the god, or so they think. Stannis might not be seeing the power of the Lord of Light, but seeing magic performed by Melisandre, and saying it is him showing Stannis the future. Is this true? or just using Stannis’ faith to manipulate him, to Melisandre’s ends? Wouldn’t be first time in history a priest used religion to manipulate a man of power.
This is just a theory, but I am curious about the “what if” elements of this idea. Would the promise of an afterlife affect the world of Westeros? I am sure there would be wars of this new religion, and not everyone would convert at once. Would Christianity make Westeros a better place to live? Maybe if they stop killing each other for one second, they would make advances in technology and peoples rights. Most people would probably say that Earth is horrible place, and I would ask, Do you think its just as bad as Westeros? Would Jesus Christ’s message go on deaf ears in Westeros? It’s no doubt that his fate would ultimately be the same in both worlds.
